There’s a First Time for Everything

The city of Philadelphia has seen championships from their beloved 76ers, Phillies, and Flyers. However, one team has been leaving the fans hungry and starved for their elusive first championship. February 4th, 2018 marked the third Super Bowl appearance for the Philadelphia Eagles and as the saying goes, “third times the charm”. Even though it wasn’t Christmas, the quarterback affectionately known as “Saint Nick” delivered the most important present to Eagles fans across the world. Backup quarterback Nick Foles threw for 373 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 receiving touchdown on route to the Eagles’ first Super Bowl championship in franchise history.

On the opposing side, the New England Patriots tried to make their own history. Tom Brady was seeking his 6th championship, most for any NFL player all-time. The team was looking for their 6th ring as well, which would tie them with the Pittsburg Steelers for most Super Bowl wins. Despite throwing for over 500 yards and 3 touchdowns, Brady and the Patriots could not pull out a win due to the lackluster New England defense who gave up 41 points and a last minute strip sack by defensive lineman Brandon Graham to seal the win for the Eagles.

The game in total set or tied numerous Super Bowl records. The Patriots tied the Denver Broncos for most Super Bowl losses with 5. Super Bowl 52 set the record for most points for the losing team in a Super Bowl (33), most passing yards in a Super Bowl for both teams (874), most missed PAT conversions in a Super Bowl by both teams (4), and many others. In the end, the Philadelphia Daily News headline said it best, this Super Bowl was “Won for the Ages”.
