Alabama is Back on Top

Every college football fan loves to hear these three magical words: College Football Playoffs. Four teams enter and only one walks away victorious. This year, the top four teams all had a legitimate shot to win a national championship. Clemson lost many of their key seniors to the NFL Draft but had young, fresh legs who carried them all the way to the number 1 spot. Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Baker Mayfield led Oklahoma to the 2nd spot. Georgia was led by their true freshman quarterback Jake Fromm into the 3rd seed. Finally, it’s no shocker that Alabama was in the top 4 and rounded out the top 4 spots in the playoffs.

Alabama made quick work of Clemson in the semifinals, defeating them by a score of 24-6. Georgia knocked off Oklahoma in a thriller that went to double overtime, with a final score of 54-48. In the National Championship Game, superb defense and Fromm’s surprising poise gave Georgia a 13-0 lead at halftime. After the struggles of starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, Alabama made a huge move to pull him in favor of true freshman Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa put Alabama back in the game, leading them to an overtime session to determine the winner. On 2nd and 26, with Georgia having a 3 point lead and looking to keep Alabama from scoring, Tagovailoa threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to receiver DeVonta Smith for the win. After all hope had seemed lost, Alabama battled back and avenged their championship loss from last season. The win cemented head coach Nick Saban’s legacy in college football and proved that Alabama is back in the winner’s circle.
