Joanna Seca is a coach at North Arlington High School and a gym teacher at Veterans Middle School. She may have joined the teaching staff recently, but she’s been a Viking her whole life. Growing up in town and attending North Arlington High School, Secca was an athlete who managed her time and was able to graduate as a salutatorian.
After an amazing soccer career, she needed to find a new purpose. After an amazing soccer career, she needed to find a new purpose. She decided she wanted to help students, athletes, and her community members from the town who shaped her into who she is today. Her passion became putting what she knew to work and helping kids to become their best selves.
After this decision, Seca used her degree in Health Science and Exercise Science to become a gym teacher. With her education, she learned how any type of movement is beneficial to one’s health, whether it be leisurely activities or sports. She wanted to teach kids the importance of physical activity and how to enjoy it.
Furthermore, Seca wants to help athletes out however she can. She has helped many as a coach and has information to give about the recruitment process in college. Seca gave the insight that it may be tough trying to decide your future for the next four years, but it can be highly rewarding. Her advice to those who want to play in college is to continue being persistent in their education and sport, and as long as an athlete is persistent and dedicated to their craft, their dreams of playing in college will come true.
Something else Seca wanted to help students with is time management. She says that for every student it was different. For her, it was a trial and error process, but she found her way of managing time. Knowing when her classes and practices were, she prioritized assignments based on date and priority, and she allowed herself to make time just to do the things she enjoyed. One thing that helped her with this was writing everything down, as it gave a clear direction in which tasks she should do.
Coach Seca wants to help everyone and relies on her life experiences to help. She was once the student-athlete trying to balance everything and get to be her best self. Now, she is doing her best to give back to the community that once helped her. She is a great coach who pushes her athletes to become the best they can be and achieve their goals.
