North Arlington and indeed New Jersey as a whole are perfect examples of the American melting pot. To celebrate this local diversity, North Arlington High School has formed the Multicultural Advocacy Club!
Having arisen from the school’s relief efforts in the wake of super-typhoon Haiyan, the club states that its mission is to “Appreciate and educate the community about cultural diversity…debunk harmful stereotypes, and promote charity both at home and abroad.” In the near future, the club hopes to play a larger role in school affairs, with a school cultural fair and possibly even educational field trips being proposed. Besides all the fun and games, though, there is serious business that goes on within room 301; you can expect a donation drive the next time a major disaster strikes, with all proceeds going to charities such as Doctors Without Borders or Save the Children (both of which allocate more than 85% of revenue directly to supporting those in need).
The nature of the club itself is reflective of its mission; all 17 of the students who attended the club’s first meeting on January 7th had unique genealogies, and therefore, unique cultures to bring to the table. If you feel that you could further the discussion, feel free to speak to either Mrs. Burns, or senior class members Angela Vilas, Amanda Pimentel, and Shaira Cruz.
