North Arlington high School has been doing the Relay for Life for 8 years and has raised more than $8,000 for this cause. Ms. Rosolen and Mrs. Maresca are the two teachers in charge of it all. The Relay for Life is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease! At the Relay, there are many teams ranging from high schools to businesses.
The Relay will be held at DeMuro Park in Nutley on May 18-19. It’s from 6pm to 6am. It first begins with the opening ceremony where all the relayers are welcomed. The first lap is the survivor lap. The survivor lap is when survivors walk to celebrate their victory over cancer. Then the opening lap is when all teams are welcomed to walk together on the track. After dark, those who have lost their battle with cancer are remembered at the Luminaria Ceremony. This is when Luminaria bags and candles are lit and line the track. “The Luminaria Ceremony is a very moving experience,” stated Ms.Rosolen. Then, throughout the night, there is individual walking. Lastly is the fight back ceremony that helps close this event.
If you cannot make this event there are many ways to raise money and still participate. The Vikings with Heart Relay for Life team is sponsoring a Flapjack Fundraiser Breakfast at Applebee’s in Kearny on March 24 from 8-10AM. It’s $10 per person and all the money goes to the American Cancer Society. The Vikings with Heart team is also having a ‘penny wars’ fundraiser and a fundraiser to sell Luminarias to as many people as possible. The Vikings with Heart team welcomes anyone who would like to fundraise for this event! So please help out a great cause!
