Giants Fire Ben and Jerry

After Sunday’s loss to the Raiders, the Giants decided not to wait until the end of the season to fire head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese. In McAdoo’s 2nd season with the team, the Giants compiled a 2-10 record after just coming off an 11-5 record last season. As offensive coordinator under previous head coach Tom Coughlin, McAdoo showed signs of promise and quarterback Eli Manning even approached the front office to persuade them to make McAdoo the new head coach. Unfortunately, McAdoo didn’t pan out and Manning would eventually be benched in favor of backup Geno Smith, a move that most likely sealed McAdoo and the rest of the team’s fate for the season.

GM Jerry Reese’s time with the team was more fruitful, winning 2 Super Bowls as part of the front office. He was responsible for drafting key players like Kevin Boss, Steve Smith, and Ahmad Bradshaw who contributed to the Giants’ success during those years. Like McAdoo, his tenure with the team went sour as the Giants have struggled in recent years, failing to make the playoffs in 5 of the last 6 seasons. Owner John Mara was quoted as saying that “Wholesale changes need to be made to this organization…it was pointless to wait any longer to make these changes.” It is fair to say that the Giants have already begun their rebuilding phase.
