NFL Draft

It is said that the NFL Draft is the true beginning of the new football season. If that’s the case, then this new NFL season has started with a bang. The Chicago Bears made the surprise move of the night by trading all the way up to the number two spot and taking North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Trubisky doesn’t have the skill set and ability to be an instant NFL starter and will have to learn behind current Bears quarterback Mike Glennon. He only has 13 games under his belt in college and has shown that he needs to work on his consistency and accuracy. The Pittsburg Steelers drafted Joshua Dobbs, the former Tennessee quarterback who some argued was better than Deshaun Watson. He will be the eventual successor to current Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

In Philadelphia, the site of this year’s draft, the Eagles made waves by drafting the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher, San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey. They also drafted defensive end Derek Barnett from Tennessee and Washington cornerback Sidney Jones. Barnett has drawn comparisons to Reggie White and broke White’s sack record while at Tennessee. Jones was touted as the best corner in this draft until he tore his ACL at his pro day at Washington. The New York Giants needed to find a quarterback who would eventually replace Eli Manning. They drafted California quarterback Davis Webb. Earlier in the draft, they addressed their tight end needs and selected Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram, who showed blazing speed and great athleticism for a guy at his position. This season is already shaping up to be a classic.
