Volleyball season has just begun, and the girls are more ready than ever. The team captains, Elizabeth Danco and Alexis Rosko, are very optimistic about the upcoming season. The Varsity team consists of one senior this year, Ahyeong Jeong, as well as the starting six: Elizabeth Danco, Alexis Rosko, Melanie Goffredo, Leandra Acosta, Brianna Wilson and Lisbeth Infante. The majority of the Varsity girls have played together for the last three years on the JV level, which makes for great chemistry. When their Coach, Ms. Afonso, was asked how she felt about the upcoming season, she stated, “I’m very optimistic because there is very strong leadership in my two captains, Alexis and Elizabeth. They’ve worked extremely hard throughout the summer in both the summer camp and league.”
As for the JV team, they have a bright future ahead of them. Coach Afonso was glad to see that most of the JV team is made up of sophomores, which shows that our volleyball team has a lot in store in the upcoming years. There are eight freshmen playing this year, which according to Coach Afonso is a great turn out. Everyone practices together, forcing the underclassmen to work diligently and be very strong. Team captains Alexis and Elizabeth stated, “To encourage the underclassmen, we tell them not to focus on their mistakes. Play smart and just try your best.” They see great potential in their younger girls, and have high expectations for this year. It seems like this will be a special year for our girls Volleyball Team.
