Hobbies are something everyone should have. They allow your brain to take a break and relax. With the fast-paced society we live in, crocheting or painting is a task desperately needed. Hobbies help improve your mental health, and research shows that they may lower heart disease and strokes. Nature Medicine reported, “…that people aged 65 and older who have hobbies report higher levels of health, happiness, and life satisfaction than those who don’t.” This demonstrates the benefits of starting a hobby. However, many people ask themselves questions like “What hobbies should I do?” or “How should I start? Those are all good questions, but it is important to remember that change does not happen overnight. It may take time to figure out what you want to do, so expect a lot of trial and error.
Starting a hobby requires identifying your interests. For example, I enjoy using my hands and making things. This is why I picked up crocheting. I really wanted to have the ability to make clothes and bags that I could use. I also grew up with my grandmother crocheting and all this inspired me to start this as my hobby. Furthermore, going to the library and seeing potential books on certain hobbies can help inspire you. Maybe start a group with your friends to share a hobby with. Recently, one of my friends introduced me to bedazzling, and lately I have been enjoying that.
Starting a hobby can be expensive. My favorite tip to save some money is to start by using items you have around your house. I would suggest that if you enjoy cooking, try finding recipes online. For me, one of my favorite things is being in the kitchen and baking for my friends and family. This allows you to advance your culinary skills and try out new foods. If you have a lot of paper at home, I would recommend string origami. There are so many different videos on YouTube with all kinds of animals to choose from. Overall, starting a new hobby can be intimidating at first. But after getting the hang of it, you will never want to stop your crafts!
