Respect Week

The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act requires that the week beginning with the first Monday in October of each year (October 3-7 in 2016) be designated as the Week of Respect in New Jersey. Respect Week is crucial, as it emphasizes the need for a positive school environment. According to author and professor, Carol B. Hillman, “A positive learning climate in a school for young children is a composite of many things.  It is an attitude that respects children. It is a place where children receive guidance and encouragement from the responsible adults around them. It is an environment where children can experiment and try out new ideas without fear or failure. It is an atmosphere that builds children’s self-confidence so they dare to take risks. It is an environment that nurtures a love of learning.” Although learning is important, it is vital for students to be exposed to respect and good manners. In turn, students will be able to make a difference in the world around them by spreading generosity, love, and integrity.

North Arlington High School truly harbored respect by rewarding kind acts. The student council promoted “Caught Being Kind”, which encouraged kindness, even when there wasn’t anyone around to witness it. The student council handed out tickets to students caught in the act of a kind deed. At the end of the week, all of the tickets were placed in a jar, and one was chosen at random. The winner, 9th grader Sean Golon, received a gift card as a reward for kindness. By spreading kindness and respect, the student council hopes to unite the students of North Arlington in order to create a positive learning experience.
