Fun Home Performance Review

“Welcome to our house on Maple Avenue,” sang the cast of Fun Home; the groundbreaking musical that won the Tony Award last year. The show centers on Allison at three pivotal moments during her life: childhood, college years, and the present. Struggling with her sexual identity, she finds it extremely hard to muster up the courage to come out to her parents. With her father facing similar issues on top of being a teacher, house restoration expert, and running a funeral home, the audience is immediately tangled into this dysfunctional family. From start to finish, the production was captivating, emotional, and certainly stellar.

The Circle in the Square Theatre made the production completely immersive and intimate. It truly felt as if you were part of the show, as the small proximity of the theater and the stage design provided that feeling. Overall, the songs and lyrics were beautifully sang and composed, along with the perfect acting. The premise of the play truly correlates to issues that many face today, making the show even more personal and engaging. All in all, Fun Home will definitely stick with the audience long after they exit the theater!
