Sexting Scandals

A shocking scandal has rocked Kings Park High School in New York. More than 20 students were suspended and 2 were arrested in the latest sexting scandal at the local high school. With so many social media platforms, “sexting” has become more and more prevalent in the past couple of years. Unfortunately, the 10-second video spread like a wildfire, and the principal took punitive measures against anyone who viewed the video.

Some students are claiming that they’re being punished unfairly because they had no idea about the content of the video prior to receiving it on their phones. Some students didn’t open the video, and they still got punished for it. As of right now, the principal is still enforcing the current punishment.

In addition, students that attend Cañon City High School in Colorado are receiving strict punishment for swapping numerous nude pictures. School officials have confirmed that students were involved in the taking and exchange of lewd photos. In turn, a felony investigation is currently being led by police. According to the Cañon City School District, charges could amount to a class 3 felony if students took “a picture of themselves showing a naked private body part and sent it to another person, … received such a picture and forwarded it to another person, or … received such a picture and retained possession of it over time.”

In many schools all over the United States, “sexting” has proved to be a growing issue. Students are becoming stealthier in their means of hiding nude photos by using a photo vault app, which is disguised as a calculator. Students should be reminded that being in possession of indecent material is a very serious crime, as one could even be deemed a sex offender. Once something is released online, it is there forever.
