Diversity in Fashion

Going against common expectations, plus size models are earning their way to the top of the fashion world. In fact, five days during New York Fashion Week (NYFW) were dedicated to the plus size community. The new series brought forth the latest styles in plus size fashion. In past years, to be successful in the fashion world, some models would feel pressured to look a certain way. In turn, many models became unhealthy and developed depression, eating disorders, and anxiety.

In an article written for Vice Media, Meredith Hattam, a 27 year-old model, states, “It’s been eight years since my days of starving myself in New York City. I wish I could say that eating disorders can completely go away, that being handed a list of things not to think could reverse the damage that happened in me when I was given a list of what not to eat… I am actually grateful for my failed career as a model, because it gave me the insight on how to assist other women who truly need support.”

Women are finally encouraged to love themselves and know that if they are confident and accept themselves, everyone else will follow. Women of all sizes have the right to feel and look beautiful in the skin that they are in. In reality, many ordinary women who are considered “plus size” may often be healthier than the women who are usually walking down the runway. Women should focus on health instead of simply weight.

In addition, disable women are also gaining a platform in fashion. According to the United States Census Bureau, about 19% of this country’s population is living with a disability. When living in a world with so much diversity, it is vital that differences are normalized. Some of the models seen at NYFW were missing limbs, or even paralyzed. Despite being in a wheelchair, they stole the show, as they didn’t let their disabilities stand in the way of their love for fashion, and more importantly, a love for diversity.

Although the fashion industry has often been seen as a hard and judgmental business, times are changing and so are the women. Women are now learning that being different is what makes fashion so alluring.
