On January 9th, more than 40 students from the culinary arts and life skills classes participated in a planting lesson from “Let’s Bloom Together,” a local farming education organization.
With the cooperation of Mrs. Bratowicz and Ms. Dempsey, Mrs. Doris Fitzgerald helped fund this project with the help of a recycling and conservation grant, which she secured earlier in the year. This lesson was the result of these staff members trying to increase awareness of the possibility of growing foods locally in our own community and also bring the knowledge of what is needed to grow plants indoors or outdoors.
Mr. Michael Bedrick of “Let’s Bloom Together” provided soil, pots, and seeds so that each student got the opportunity to plant a seedling. This lesson addressed many standards including those of science, life skills, and culinary arts. Afterwards, students were encouraged to write about their plants and daily growth observances. Staff members are hopeful that this lesson has ignited a spark about the possibility of growing our own plants one day to use in classes and perhaps even at home.
