On January 22 and January 30, students in life skills’ classes had the opportunity to learn tips and tricks of the trade firsthand from a registered dietitian. During a store tour of the local Shop-Rite, students perused the aisles and selected healthy choices for snacks, discovered how to read a nutrition label, and selected healthy choices for breakfast, dinner, and lunch.
During a second lesson, students were actively involved in shopping for ingredients for a meal and actually cooking a meal using a recipe. Ms. Julie Harrington, R.D. of Shop Rite, was delighted to spend two mornings working with our students in order to raise awareness of healthy eating. NAHS staff members who contributed to the effort were Mrs. Ellen Bratowicz, Mrs. Doris Fitzgerald and Mr. Kevin Blackford. “I think the students really loved the idea of spending time in the store and learned some very valuable tools for choosing healthy meals,” said Doris Fitzgerald.
