On November 18th, students and staff at NAHS hosted an evening of games, food and fun for the local HANDS group of North Arlington. The event was made possible by a grant secured by the North Arlington Education Association through the NJEA Pride program and coordinated by Mrs. Doris Fitzgerald. The event was a great success with more than 30 students who volunteered to assist, chaperone and mingle with the HANDS members.
Students and adult participants played board games, made crafts, and danced the night away. Students also served and shared pizza from a local vendor, ‘Slice’ on River Road in North Arlington, and then selected the songs that they wanted to dance to with the guests.
Casino Night is one of many volunteer activities in which students get involved in serving the community outside of the school day. At the end of the evening, Ms. Doreen Hartnett who runs the HANDS program events thanked the teachers and students for inviting them. “I’m so proud of our students for interacting so well with the population”, said Mrs. Fitzgerald who spearheaded the event.
