Every Wednesday North Arlington High School has Fitness Wednesdays. The program, Fitness Wednesdays, is a great way to get the student body moving. This takes place during the students’ gym class. Fitness Wednesdays used to be on Mondays last year. This involved just walking around the gym for 25 minutes. However, this year, the gym teachers feel that doing more rigorous activities will be more beneficial for the students. “Physical education is about having fun, but also being active” said one of our Physical Education teachers, Mr. Marcantuono.
During Fitness Wednesdays, the students do various types of aerobic and anaerobic exercises. There is a special routine they have to perform during gym period. There are certain stations marked on what to do, such as, sit-ups, push-ups, using weights, etc. There are groups of 3 to 4 people per station. As they rotate through each station, students must perform each specific physical activity as many times as possible in a minute and then move on to the next.
Gym teachers feel Wednesdays are good days because it breaks up the week nicely. Being more active during gym class can benefit some of the high school athletes as well. It gives them a chance to work out too, if they can’t after school. What is the importance of Fitness Wednesdays? Mr. Marcantuono stated, “With childhood obesity increasing in America, we feel it’s important to stress the benefits of exercise and healthy living.” Let’s get moving!
