The Intrepid and Space Museum

The Intrepid and Space Museum

On May 22, 2015, a number of students from US History classes, taught by Mr. Galante and Mrs. Kusher, took a trip to the Intrepid Air, Space Museum in New York City.

Students had an amazing time learning about the history of the US Navy while aboard an actual retired naval ship. The USS Intrepid featured various real-life aircraft used in World War II on its deck, including the infamous Blackbird spy plane, famous for its record-breaking speed.

The vast floating museum also houses an actual space shuttle on board. The Enterprise space shuttle was donated to the Intrepid directly from NASA. Students from NAHS learned new terms like ‘thrust’ and ‘drag’ in relation to aerodynamics. Students then put their new knowledge to good use by creating their own replicas of military planes in the form of paper airplanes!

The exciting day was enjoyed by students and teachers alike. Mrs. Kusher stated, “Everyone involved had a great time and the weather for the trip was absolutely perfect.” Her favorite part was seeing the world famous jets flying in synchronization overhead.  All in all, this field trip was a complete success, and hopefully there will be plenty more visits by NAHS students to such an amazing museum!
