Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters is a rather entertaining movie, as well as, comical and epic watch. Though, in all honesty, it suffers from the same issues that all book based movies suffer from; as it is not as accurate to the source material as many of the fans would like. Though, it is much more accurate than the first movie. In the first, many key elements and characters were cut out most likely due to time and/or budget constraints; this problem was almost nonexistent in the sequel. Unfortunately, one person who was cut out was Tantalus, who replaced Chiron in the novel and is one dimensionally evil, most likely due to the fact that he is physically unable to eat and drink anything. Also, in the novel, Percy and Tyson, a young Cyclops who is also his half-brother, have a quite a different relationship in the movie.
The effects were exceptional, especially when portraying the monsters and the magic abilities of the demigods, including Percy’s water abilities. Moreover, Percy gains the ability to see topographical maps on the ocean floor, which looks stunning in the movie. The special effects, in my opinion, almost make up for the few transition hic-ups stated before. Also, the movie seems to show the fact that the Cyclops Polythemus shows resentment toward Tyson seeing him as a mockery of their kind. This resentment actually gives much more depth to the villain, which makes him seem human.
Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters is a good watch. It may deviate from the source material, but said deviations are minute at best. The effects were enjoyable and the villain was marvelously fleshed out. Overall, I’d give The Sea of Monsters an 8.5 out of 10.
