The Conjuring series has reached an end as of September 5, 2025. With the new addition of The Conjuring: Last Rites, directed by Michael Chaves, the movie follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren and their investigation in Pennsylvania to exorcise a demon from a family’s home. This film primarily serves as a send-off for the characters Ed and Lorraine Warren, based on the real Warrens, as the director claims that all the movies in the series are based on their true paranormal accounts. While all of the Conjuring movies follow a real-life haunting, this particular one is based on the Smurl family haunting. The reason for the major publicity of this movie is that the Smurl haunting is supposedly the case that sent the Warrens into retirement.
As for fan reactions, many were left disappointed, while others loved the film. Ratings for the movie came out to a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.4/10 on IMDb. Reviews on said websites include ones of how it’s “an absolutely amazing movie” (Milwood), compared to reviews on the other side of the spectrum, noting that “the storyline felt weak and predictable, the pacing was painfully slow” (Zee). The anticipation for the movie’s release seems to have greatly exceeded the excitement once it became available in theaters. Despite this, the movie grossed $436 million worldwide from ticket sales and merchandise, which is more than double the amount that The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It made.
The movie is the fourth and final installment of the Conjuring series, although it’s likely not the last in the franchise as spinoffs are already being discussed. Seeing as there’s still a future for the franchise, many fans are waiting to see what the director has to offer.
