World Record For Most Instagram Likes….Goes to an Egg

Over the years, the internet has seen some pretty bizarre trends, fads, and feats. Nobody can market or predict when something can go viral or become a meme.  That being said- Most people would not have predicted that the world record for the most likes on an Instagram photo would go to a lone picture of an egg.

Previously, celebrity Kylie Jenner held the record for the most likes at 18 million on a picture of her newborn baby, Stormi. Out of the blue, however, came the egg. Many accounts on Instagram advertise unique content to amount followers and likes, but @world_record_egg had a simple goal: To beat Kylie Jenner’s record for likes on the photo of the egg.

According to a VICE article by R. Donaghey, the man who photographed the egg, Serghei Platanov, did not expect his photo get this much attention. He is not the owner of the account, and the photo is a stock image he posted on Shuttershock. Regardless of its origins, the egg picture was able to surpass the record and currently rests at over 47 million likes. Just like that, a photo of an egg outdid a member of the Kardashian family.

This did not come without backlash, however. Soon after “egg gang” promoted the photo to the top, Jenner released a video of herself smashing an egg on the ground to jokily respond to the photo that stole her spot. As of now, the egg is still amassing millions of likes and the account has a link to a merch store where fans can purchase trivial items associated with the photo.

While this is all fun and games, it will be another passing moment in the history of the internet. Soon enough, there will be a new trend, meme, or video for people to boost to the top of the news headlines, and the egg will be all but forgotten. Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame, egg.
