The National Honor Society is a highly prestigious honor that can increase your chances of being accepted into the school of your dreams. In order to be accepted into the NHS you must be nominated and fulfill many requirements. A eleventh or twelfth grade student hoping to join must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher (roughly about an 88.8 average on a 100-point scale), be involved in at least 2 school activities, and have the required volunteer time. If one is able to pass these obligations they must fill out a detailed packet. The specifics one must state and get signed are their community service hours, after-school actives, and leadership positions. One must also write an essay consisting of at least 450 words. Within this paper a scholar must simply answer why they would like to join, how they contribute to the community, and what they would expect to do if accepted into this program.
“There’s a five member council that I do not sit on; they review the student’s essays, community service, and teacher ratings. Then, they discuss the candidate and make the majority vote for the candidate to get in.” The quotation above is spoken by Mrs. Kusher, the head of the National Honor Society. She also explains what would happen if a student where to be accepted. “Once a candidate is notified, we have a dinner to induct them officially”. The inductee dinner is simply a meal to celebrate and welcome the new members. I, recently being nominated know how difficult it could be to fulfill the requirements needed to join a respected assembly such as the National Honor Society. However, my fellow classmates assure me that the hard work and dedication pays off in the end. I highly encourage the students of North Arlington High School to take such an organization seriously and strive to become a part of it.
