An already serious dilemma has been brought to the attention of all North Arlington High School students. Grades nine through twelve endured a heartfelt and powerful compilation movie full of recollections and stories told by former gang members who dispel the lies surrounding organized street gangs. Many expressed their deep regret through the realization of what they left behind once sentenced and sent away to prison for years on end, some, never to see the outside of their insipid cells again. Life Facing Bars touched upon certain points that were most informative to students who knew nothing about street gangs. Matt Yoon (creator of Life Facing Bars) brings question to the fictional “loyalty” that gangs use as leverage to attract young people into their organization.
Moistened sleeves and glistening cheeks were prevalent throughout the halls after the conclusion of the assembly. The majority of students appeared to be deeply affected by the moral of the speaker as well as the movie, but some students were sure to make the point that the assembly was a waste of time that could’ve been spent better. Certain students, who shall remain nameless, felt that the assembly did not apply to this area. They felt that our town is “for the most part” a safe and somewhat sound town while there are neighboring troubled towns and cities. The message, of course, has been taken into perspective by all and has served its purpose to inform our youth of gang related troubles.
