July 17, 2014, the day New York and the world had lost yet again another man in police involved incidents. Eric Garner left behind his wife and children as he suffered from a heart attack as the Police tried to detain him. CNN stated, “Officer Daniel Pantaleo, one of the officers on the scene, put his arm around the much taller Garner’s neck, to pull him back and down to the ground, as shown in a video recording of the event, which has since gone viral. After officer Pantaleo removed his arm from around Garner’s neck, and while lying face down on the sidewalk surrounded by four officers bearing down on him, Garner is heard repeating “I can’t breathe” at least 8 times” Eric’s heart gave out in the hospital an hour later upon arrival. Afterwards, numerous protests and angered citizens all around the U.S. broke out to demand a decision on the penalty Officer Pantaleo would face due to Eric’s passing.
The grand jury decision last week was not to indict the officer in the death of Eric Garner and as guessed, protests and angered people all across the world felt that the police does a better job getting rid of lives rather than saving them. According to the NY Times, “The decision by a Staten Island grand jury not to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo, whose chokehold maneuver contributed to Mr. Garner’s death, has led to several days and nights of protests, highway blocking and scores of arrests. The city’s schools and colleges have not been immune to the ripple effects, and have sometimes found it tricky to balance students’ desires to react with administrators’ desires not to disrupt what the students are there for.” As the deaths of many more continue, we can say that these cries from the people most likely won’t cease.
