Since October is breast cancer awareness month, the student council created a day dedicated to breast cancer awareness. Real Vikings Wear Pink day was on Friday, October 14. On Real Vikings Wear Pink day, the student council asked that all Vikings wear the color pink. During first period, on Friday the 14th, the student council went to each class and asked everyone who was wearing pink to donate one dollar to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Besides wearing pink in school, every Viking team was wearing pink to show support on the fields and on the court. Student Council purchased pink pre-wrap, tape and ribbon to distribute to all of the teams to show their awareness. In addition to going pink last week, some of the athletes decided to further their awareness by purchasing additional items to show more support.
Some female athletes wore pink extensions in their hair which they purchased from a local hair salon with proceeds being donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Some athletes also decided to get pink cleats, shoe laces, gloves, bows and socks to wear throughout the entire month of October.
According to Cancer.org “The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is a little less than 1 in 8 (12%).” Real Vikings Wear Pink was a great opportunity for students and staff to come together and show support in the fight against breast cancer.
